It’s been said that viewing the streets of India from the vantage point of a tuk tuk is to experience India in an entirely different light. The same can be said for walking the narrow alleys and crowded bazaars where cars don’t fit. To really understand the complexity of India is to be on the ground, listening to the enormous range of languages spoken in one compact area; to inhale the aroma of rotting sewage mixed with the sweet nectar of fresh flowers for sale above an open drain; to see the skill of chaat or chai vendors preparing tasty morsels with expert speed. And inevitably, a walking tour provides travelers an up close immersion in the architectural elegance found in any city of India.
Hosted by guides with firm grasps on their city, walking tours are perfect for tourists interested in more than highlights of noted destinations, while gaining insight on a fascinating side of India few travelers think to explore.
Below is a list of organized walking tours by city. Routes typically are chosen for either architectural, cultural, spiritual or historical reasons. Most tours run between 2-3 hours, however those that run longer will schedule time for a lunch break. Safety is already factored into the walking routes. Simply show up with comfortable shoes, a bottle of water, snacks if needed, and you’re off. Be sure to check for specific pricing as well as timings. Not all walks run every day, and some change what walks are provided weekly.
