Years after a unanimous resolution was passed by the Orissa Legislative Assembly in 2008, the eastern Indian state of Orissa officially becomes Odisha. Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2010, received the nod of both the houses of the Parliament in 2010, however the name of Orissa wasn’t officially recognized until November 4, 2011, after approval by Indian President Pratibha Patil.

Along with Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2010, the Constitution (113th Amendment) Bill was also approved. That Bill, calling for the change of the name of the state language, officially changes Odisha’s language from Oriya to Odia.

Odisha’s new name will take some time to change. India’s official tourism website, incredibleindia.org, still lists the state as Orissa, along with it’s own state tourism website orissatourism.gov.in. Even India’s national government website still lists the state as Orissa.
