Nehru Memorial Museum and Library New Delhi India

No visit to Delhi is really complete without a brief visit to the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. Located inside Teen Murti Bhavan, this building is the former residence of Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as the first prime minister of newly independent India. From August 15, 1947, until his untimely death on May 27th, 1964, Nehru shaped the foundation of what has become the superpower of modern day India.

Teen Murti Bhavan Nehru House New Delhi IndiaWalking the property is worth blocking, at minimum, an hour of your time. Well maintained gardens surround the imposing home, a British design taken over after Independence. Today, Teen Murti is home base to the Centre for Contemporary Studies, headquarters of Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Nehru Memorial Library, and the Nehru Fellowship. One of four Nehru Planetariums of India is also located here.

Glass cases line multiple rooms on two levels displaying different artifacts from Nehru’s signature dress to important documents and photographs. Tourists with no background knowledge on Nehru are well served coming here where they will learn a generous amount of history. Keep in mind the life and works of this powerful man is told from a strictly beneficial view. For an alternative viewpoint of Independence and his time in office, ask nearly any elder Indian of their opinion. No matter how it’s told, Nehru’s legacy is seen in countless statues across India. But a stop at Teen Murti Bhavan will teach visitors, first hand, how Nehru took on the most powerful modern-day empire successfully.

Open daily except Monday. Free admission.
