Many of my friends in the U.S., have questioned me over the years why I have never gone for massage. There is no answer other than I’m too cheap to pay for the service. I’m not shy, bashful, insecure about my body or nervous for any reason. That changed during my recent visit to the south of India. With a travel partner who loves massage in tow, four opportunities in three different cities presented themselves.
Hoysala Village Resort, Hassan, Karnataka
We “found” this place driving back to Hassan after a day of sightseeing. Our driver mentioned it was a rather nice resort so we asked to stopped. The resort is a series of cabins and multi-guestroom buildings set amid perfectly landscaped surroundings. Guests are led by way of a stone path from the front reception and dining hall to their cabins ultimately ending at the pool and massage center.
Three services are provided beginning at Rs 500 (30 mins) up to Rs 700 (1 Hr).
My trav bud and I agreed the technique used was fair. The surroundings were pleasant although the layout is a bit awkward. To reach the male massage room clients must walk through the female room which butts against the pool entrance. Once inside, separate doors provide privacy and a buffer should one client finish ahead of the other client. Ceiling fans offer some relieve from the heat while sun lights the rooms. Very little noise is heard from the pool area even with guests swimming.
Males: Massage performed in the buff, no towel covering offered.
Females: Massage performed with only lower garment worn, towel covering offered
Overall: Both of us would return. The environment was comfortable, the conversation just right and the massage techniques satisfactory. Afterward, grab a drink at the bar inside the main dining hall.
Cost: Rs 2000 ($45, tip included)
