A popular trekking trail connecting Mcleodganj/Dharamsala to the lesser traveled city of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. Gaddi shepherds enroute to their summer grazing pastures in the upper Ravi Valley and Lahaul traverse the same trails, offering a reassurance of help if needed.
How Hard: Easy to Moderate
How Long: 5 Days
How High: 4425 Meters
When: May – June, September – October
Day 1: Mcleodganj/Bhagsu to Triund (2994 meters). Of the 10 kms covered this day, only the last few are difficult. Walking time 3-4 hours.
Day 2: Triund to Lahesh Cave (3598 meters). The trail is a mix of forest covered terrain and open meadows. The last push is tiring coming into Lahesh Cave. Plan a walking time of 3-4 hours to cross 9 kms.
Day 3: Lahesh Cave to Indrahar Pass (4425 meters) to Chatra Parao. Eat your Wheaties this morning before setting off on a 6-7 walk across 12 kms of trail. From the pass one can view Pir Panjal Range in the north and Mani Mahesh Kailash (5656 M) peak in the east. Descend from the pass to Chatru Parao.
Day 4: Chatru Parao to Kuarsi (2747 meters). Another 6-7 hour walking day begins on the left side of the valley before crossing the valley on a permanent snow bridge, through several meadows and finally down the right side of the valley into Kuarsi. Distance covered, 15 kms.
Day 5: Kuarsi to Machetar (1800 meters) to Chamba. Continue into the valley surrounded by stunning mountain views. This day’s trek of 16 kms ends at the roadhead at Machetar after a walking time of 5-6 hrs. Arrange for taxi or catch a local bus to Chamba, 80kms away, where a host of hotel options await.
