As you reach the outer limits of Manikaran, Himachal Pradesh, there are several tourist spots filled with shops, cafes and food stalls. Keep in mind the target audience of Manikaran is mostly Hindu and Sikh pilgrims. Oh, and the novelty foreign tourist drawn to spiritual hot spots.
They come in search of peace and enlightenment by way of the internet cafes, espresso stands, easy access to drugs and cheap housing. That said, it wasn’t too surprising to see a German Bakery stall as we made our way to town.
So, on the way back down from Manikaran, Rakesh and I stopped for some goodies. We decided on a chocolate croissant and chocolate brakett. I didn’t think until after we left to ask where the items were made. Our treats were placed into a brand new McDonald’s bag. My experience was going full circle…Buying German food in India, carried away in a bag from a US company.
We tore into the pastries as if we hadn’t eaten in days. Both had this perfect texture and just the right amount of chocolate in each bite. For Rs 110, this may have been my best find yet. If only there was a need to see Manikaran again so that a stop at the German Bakery was in order.
Watch carefully for this place. Standing just off the road by itself, it’s possible to miss it with so many other shops and attractions passing by. Cheap, tasty and completely touristy.
