8 Tips Regarding Pot in India

In Culture, Top 10, Travel Tips / 22 comments

An endless array of myths, mixed with some facts, surround pot in India. From smoking to buying and transporting, rather than try to cover the myriad of topics this subject involves, I’ll get down to brass tacks for those of you interested in this subject.

1. The sale, consumption, and transporting of Marijuana is illegal. Fines and jail terms seem to vary based on outdated sources. The most commonly referenced fine for possession is Rs 10,000 with a maximum jail sentence of 6 months for small quantities (100 grams). Large quantities (1 kg) Rs 100,000 with a jail sentence of up to 10 years.

2. Sourcing and purchasing pot is extremely easy. A local in Northern India, when asked how to find a source, told me to “look for any Israeli”. He wasn’t wrong, but you can also find it from local shop owners, taxi drivers, tuk tuk drivers and agency tourist vehicle drivers. Even if they don’t carry or sell any product, they know the fastest connection. Be prepared to provide a little baksheesh for their efforts. Sadhus are also excellent sources for small amounts. In the more touristy locations such as Mcleodganj, Manali, Varanasi, Goa, Rishikesh, etc. you’ll find many foreign tourists looking to earn some money to expense their long-haul stays in India. Use discretion, word travels fast among drivers and cops love to pick on them.

Stories of bribes are rampant on the internet so proceed with caution if you find yourself in police custody. Local business owners have found it more lucrative to sell marijuana than focus on their main businesses of hotel and/or restaurant ownership. Authorities look the other way thanks to large bribes paid by the businessmen, but also in exchange for said men supplying names and faces of their own customers.

4. Don’t be a dope by smoking in public. Use common sense when lighting up in hotels and small, confined places. There are so many places to seek solace in India regardless of how large a city you find yourself.

5. Indians, for the most part, are not used to smoking pot in organic forms that Westerners do. You’ll commonly find your Indian counterparts mixing cigarette tobacco with equal parts marijuana. Once mixed, the ingredients are funneled back into the wrapper and smoked like a regular cigarette.

6. During Holi and some other special times throughout the year, a beverage called bhang lassi is drunk in honor of the festivities. When consumed around Holi, there appears to be a free pass for locals and foreigners in the eyes of the law. Expect to see Indians affected much more than Westerners by this sweet concoction. After several glasses, in honor of Holi 2008 of course, I felt no effects whereas my Indian friends were rolling around in laughter. As with any food items in India, ensure how your bhang lassi is prepared.

7. Transporting of pot is just plain dumb. Trains are regularly searched by very efficient police officers. If traveling by car, fake roadblocks are common on well traveled tourist routes in hopes of collecting large bribes. The attending officer may search the vehicle and it’s passengers all for the sake of imposing fear in order to collect his money. Obviously do not carry any drugs to the airport.

8. Purchase only what you need within the time allotted for your current location. Avoid carrying large amounts at one time with you. Do not stash product in your hotel, find a nondescript spot outside of your room. Clean up after yourself regardless of where you smoke. You’d be amazed how fast word travels in India. If you draw attention to yourself and your habits, you’ll be on center stage in short order.

For the sake of keeping a clean reputation, I do not sell, grow, carry, or source pot/marijuana/cannabis in the USA or India. Don’t kill the messenger folks.

    Facts:

1.In India You can get marijuana for less than one dollar(if u personally go and buy it)
2.Ask any rickshaw wala to buy it for you for 2 dollars
3.About smoking in open- This is based on geography. U cannot smoke in open in public places, but u can smoke in open in any hill stations like manali, mc leodganj, bhagsu, Nainital etc…. No body will interfere with you…
4.And now if at all a policemen catches you smoking weed, tok to him humbly, attract the attention of a local Indian and den u mite hav to pay a maximum of 10 to 20 dollars…

Hi, i am from India and used to be surrounded by “Ganjedis”(weed smokers). I know friends who used to buy, carry and transport it. Your tips are absolutely helpful for foreigners. I would like to add few points.

In India mostly you will get indica cannabis which cause sleepiness so small and little red eyes, so make sure you have sun glasses. Light shade is even better after evening.

Carrying while traveling via train: always book ticket in 3 tier AC or above, look like businessman. No polish will check sophisticated looking person by traveling in 2 or 3 tier AC. Hide your stuff in the extreme corner. Carry trolly bag rather then backpack.

In above comment: dont try point 3 ;) be safe and keep your secret with you because word travels really really fast in India. And you will not have to face point 4 ;) (in above comment)

In very touristic places (like Goa) be extra careful. Dont do anything stupid like carrying & smoking while dressing up like a Sadhu. That will be like a magnet for polish and it might cost a LOT.

    Enjoy

In wanting to go back to India, I have heard of police keeping good records on tourist activities. Is there a chance that records on smoking in public would be saved and come back to get ya??

Great question Mark, I will ask some contacts about that. In the meantime let’s defer to the readers…

lol hobs have you smoked all your wits towards getting delusional and paranoid —- read aloud what you have asked for over here. but anyways let me clear your query … the answer is no. the police would find or make a case out of you to get a life on the spot so dont worry about previous petty records such as smoking in public.

The police do tend to observe the tourists more keenly than the Indians of course. But as far as I know the police never do keep any track of the tourist activities only if you would have been involved in some previous issues. I am Indian and I love smoking pot too and the feeling of getting high. Just be casual as you go about smoking weed. Being a bit stressed out due to fear of getting caught by the police can send a wrong signal to the people.
And of course the location does matter a great deal. There are some places where I plainly take out a Rizla paper and some weed with tobacco right in front of the locals and they don’t object at all. It’s all about knowing the place where you are and the type of people around you but unfortunately here in India its only we the people who can figure out that thing very well.

Nonetheless you can enjoy very well without worried that much at all. In case you do get into some trouble you can try slipping in some money any time to the police and they would never ever bother you!

Dangerous? More like stupid. Security will surely catch it and I’d hate for it to be in India where you would give them a great opportunity for bribes in order to get off free and clear.

He arranged some Supercream for me once..that stuff was awesome i got it for 2500/tola..these are the latest prices he has.. But they keep on changing depending upon the quality.
