Sweet Tooth in Delhi

Nathu’s Sweets has built a small brand within the greater Delhi area that many tourists would enjoy. Cases upon cases of freshly made Indian sweets and other goodies are stocked within their 5 Delhi Metro stores and 4 regional locations. During Diwali 2009, I stopped into the Laxmi Nagar shop adjacent to my hotel. Rs 500 ($11) bought me 2 boxes of treats shaped as Himachali apples for a gift to my Himachali friend and his family. The store was packed with customers as you can imagine for such a large festival celebration.

Tables of nuts, candy and other gift box edibles were stacked high outside the store front. Colorful Diwali decorations were hung along the large store windows. Inside, more tables of stacked gift boxes were laid out in the middle of the store. A temporary gift wrapping station was set up to accommodate the numerous requests.

Customers order by first proceeding to the cashier where you pay up front for your items. Customers then take their receipt and hand it to the next available clerk behind the food counters. Your order is boxed and you are sent on your way. This system clearly works well as my wait time was nearly nil even though the store was virtually stuffed to capacity.

But, it’s not just treats to be found here. Nathu’s offers an extensive menu of freshly made North & South Indian dishes, sides and appetizers. Come hungry as the options are plentiful and travelers can use this opportunity to sample new foods without the large expense of a sit down restaurant.

Locations are posted on their website as well as contact information.
