EAT: Recong Peo, Vikas Bar & Restaurant

Vikas was an easy find the night I unexpectedly found myself in Recong Peo, Himachal Pradesh, turned away at the Spello check post earlier that day. Fog had set into the town hidden within the mountain ridge bringing rain and cool temps. Staring at me across the way from my hotel, the upper level business had a steady stream of traffic heading in and out it’s main door.  Given the weather and my Inner Line Permit fiasco, my motivation to find dinner went as far as the short walk to Vikas.

Thoughts of the countless movies with entry scenes, and patrons who come to a screeching halt, came to mind as I entered the restaurant. The main dining ro0m consists of 6 tables with long benches and chairs providing ample seating. Local men packed the place tightly, devouring the food in front of them. A lone server was rushing to cover the needs of all the hungry guests.

The wait was brief for a simple meal of veg chowmein and sweet lassi. Along with my friend and driver Rakesh, our total bill was Rs 185. Alcohol is stocked at the “Bar”, which is nothing more than a few shelves of bottled booze. A small Western homage in this far away location. Portion size must be what brings the locals coming back.

Cheap, easy atmosphere and good food is served up within walking distance to the main intersection of town.
